In South Korea, a German and Korean–based architecture firm used 1,500 semi-transparent plastic baskets and covered a vacant building. A Korean factory manufactured the baskets with high-density polyethylene and UV coated them to ensure durability
Hyunje Joo, the artist-architect, indicated that he wanted to create a cost-effective, adaptable, recyclable architectural element. He said, “The surface minimizes the separation between the inside and outside, as light and silhouettes beyond the space show through. Over the course of the day, changes show on the surface of the wall due to the diffusion and reflection of the material. The passage of time is more actively sensed from both inside and outside, as these light effects stimulate our senses.”
In 2007, Naju City, the location of the project, was chosen as an “Innovative City” and has since attracted and witnessed ecologically sensitive developments.
Though the installation was temporary, the visual and spatial effects were noteworthy and architects claimed that the project would be carried on to future endeavors.
Ecomass Technologies
For nearly twenty years, Ecomass Technologies had pioneered innovative solutions through vibration dampening, lead substitution, gamma ray shielding, and engineered thermoplastics. It has extensive experience with government and commercial customers and has triumphed over multiple challenges to satisfy its customer’s needs. Its know-how and skill with regard to the design and development of high density polymers, thermoplastic composite materials, and high density thermoplastic compounds allow its customers to focus on form and function while it solves material challenges.
Thermoplastic composite materials, high density plastics, and high density polymers make parts lighter and less expensive and offer various performance benefits over conventional materials such as glass, ceramics, aluminum, steel, zinc and lead. Countless industries seek lighter and stronger materials – even artists seek such materials to express their visions for a better world. “Heavy plastics,” high density materials, and high gravity compounds, as they’re all known, may sound complicated and sometimes conflicting, but that’s never the case. They always serve their goal and purpose, whether it’s to add weight to improve performance, add mass to specific locations, balance assemblies to increase service-life, dampen vibration to enhance the customer contact experience, or perform gamma ray shielding to improve safety. As well, Ecomass’ high-gravity compounds can also be used as a lead substitute and/or can also replace aluminum, steel, stainless steel, brass, bronze, copper, and tungsten in a variety of applications.
EU RoHS Directive, are 100% lead free, and do not contain any EPA toxic or hazardous materials and comply with Section 1502 of the Dodd-Frank Act.
