TriFusion Devices, of College Station, Texas, along with BASF and Essentium, Has developed a 3-D printed prosthetic leg printed with reinforced short carbon fiber polyamide and a socket crafted with thermoplastic material. The leg’s socket allows for easier and faster adjustments and provides a snugger fit. Standard carbon fiber sockets usually take around three days to cast and mold. TriFusion’s 3D-printed sockets ship within twenty-four hours of scanning.

The prosthetic is lighter, less expensive, and offers people freedom and mobility. Patients who tested it gave it positive feedback.

The companies’ next steps will be to incorporate softer material into the design to further boost patient comfort. They expect the prosthetic to be ready for general release later this year.
