With the European Union regulating lead and the nation recognizing its weight and toxicity, manufacturers are continually seeking safer alternatives, including high-density plastics and tungsten. Tungsten is not toxic or environmentally hazardous.
Wolfram Industries recently announced another tungsten based substitute: Triamet, a heavy metal, high density, tungsten-based alloy, which absorbs radiation and shields against gamma radiation. Because tungsten is heavy and dense, it’s appropriate for shielding against high-energy electromagnetic radiation. Plus, Triamet’s melting point of more than 1,000°C makes sure there is little fire risk.
Triamet is also used in radiation therapy for tumor treatment.
Radioactive seeds delivered to a tumor and later removed during internally delivered radiation therapy can be stored in Triamet containers.
Ecomass Industries
Ecomass Technologies has also responded to the European union’s directive and the nation’s concerns and has helped original equipment manufacturers and material processors around the world to develop eco-friendly thermoplastic compounds that offer lightweight, toxic free radiation shielding, gamma ray shielding, and x-ray shielding
For years, lead was the standard in radiation shielding. It was cheap, simple, and effective. Mounting health, safety and environmental concerns, however, resulted in progressively severe environmental regulations. Ecomass employs a tungsten powder lead substitute and polymeric matrix composite to optimizes material density and wall thickness. Moreover, it is a completely lead-free, injection-moldable thermoplastic solution that satisfies all regulatory concerns and satisfies, gamma, x-ray, and radiation shielding requirements.
Ecomass Compounds have replaced lead in numerous radiation, x-ray, gamma, and gamma ray shielding applications, including:
o industrial x-ray shielding
o medical x-ray shielding
o temporary shielding at nuclear power plants
Like the entire Ecomass Compound product line, Ecomass’ lead free radiation, gamma, and x-ray shielding compounds are RoHS compliant and do not contain lead, lead compounds, or any other U.S. EPA hazardous or toxic material.
Contact Ecomass today or see its website and complete one if its RFQ Forms to find out how you and/or your company might be able to use its lead free compounds.
